Comedians like Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert continue doing a better job of parsing the insanity of the Trump gang than traditional “both sides” media.

Seth takes a closer look at President Trump appointing Mike Pence to take charge of the response to the coronavirus outbreak and reassuring absolutely nobody.

There are times I’m convinced fashion designers take perverse pleasure in making attractive models look ugly by dressing the models up in things like that.

An interesting thing: Part of why Clinton may have lost is that Nate’s publishing of probability of winning may have confused people as to what are true state in the polls were, leading some people to think they didn’t have to vote for her.

ronald reagan, bill clinton, george w bush, barack obama and donald trump were all faced with the same major crisis, part of which cost americans billions of dollars

reagan made an optimistic speech and cut taxes for wealthy people

clinton made a heartfelt speech and his approval rating went up

bush invaded another country

obama borrowed money to cover the losses and urged americans not to prosecute those responsible

trump pouted, whined that it was all a big hoax designed to make him look bad, and blamed everybody but himself

Let’s be fair: Trump’s strategy is far better than invading another country.

Hey — maybe Trump has a disease that I first heard of on SVU:

Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a rare genetic degenerative brain disorder. It is characterized by an inability to sleep (insomnia) that may be initially mild, but progressively worsens, leading to significant physical and mental deterioration.

Lack of sleep in itself causes cognitive impairment. Isn’t driving exhausted as dangerous as DUI, except it is legal?

The sooner the field consolidates down to Bernie and one other viable candidate, the better the odds are that that candidate can win the nomination outright or at least win more delegates and votes than Sanders. Either of those scenarios is vastly preferable to one in which Sanders is the leader in delegates and votes, but loses the nomination in a bitter convention battle.

There are times I’m convinced fashion designers take perverse pleasure in making attractive models look ugly by dressing the models up in things like that.

You’re not far off. A lot of the weird designs you see at fashion shows are like the “concept cars” you see at auto shows. They’re meant to showcase what the designer can do, not necessarily what’s practical for them to do.

FYI it’s a pretty good book as I recall. There’s a passage in there where Brower is describing Dyson’s final, absurdly upscaled design for his Orion spacecraft. It would have used thermonuclear bombs encased in an ablative reaction mass made from the astronauts own feces. The bombs were to be sent through a small opening in a giant parabolic dish attached to the stern of the spaceship with massive shock absorbers, and detonated at the focal point of the parabola, generating forward thrust in, essentially, lurches of jerk attenuated down into a survivable level of acceleration. If I recall it right, Brower describes the entire method as “massive shit-storms in space.”

The stuff about the life and baidarka designs of Dyson’s son is pretty cool too.

“Given the porous nature of our border, and the continued lack of operational control due to the influence of dangerous cartels, it is foreseeable, indeed predictable, that any outbreak in Central America or Mexico could cause a rush to our border, the letter states. It’s signed by 10 Republicans, including Reps. While the Iranian regime is insisting that the death toll from the Coronavirus stands at just 34, reports are starting to come in that it’s actually MUCH higher:

Coronavirus: Iran’s deaths at least 210

At least 210 people in Iran have died as a result of the new Coronavirus disease, sources in the country’s health system have told BBC Persian.

Most of the victims are from the capital, Tehran, and the city of Qom, where cases of Covid-19 first emerged.

The figure is six times higher than the official death toll of 34 given by the health ministry earlier on Friday.

Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour insisted it was being transparent and accused the BBC of spreading lies.

It comes after a member of parliament for Qom accused the authorities of a cover-up and the US expressed concern that they may not be sharing information.

Based on some assessments I’ve heard earlier today in this corner of the planet, even this figure might turn out to be smaller than the truth.

RawStory: Wisconsin appeals court rejects voter purge targeting more than 200,000 people

Voting rights advocates applauded a Wisconsin appeals court ruling Friday which is set to stop a voter purge from going forward—sparing more than 200,000 people from having their names removed from voter lists.

A three-judge panel unanimously rejected a lawsuit filed by conservative law group Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty arguing that the voter purge of about 209,000 should go forward ahead of the 2020 election.

The decision represented “good news for democracy for all,” tweeted Mary Kay Henry, president of the SEIU.

While the Iranian regime is insisting that the death toll from the Coronavirus stands at just 34, reports are starting to come in that it’s actually MUCH higher:

Coronavirus: Iran’s deaths at least 210

Based on some assessments I’ve heard earlier today in this corner of the planet, even this figure might turn out to be smaller than the truth…

What is going on there? The high mortality rate they officially reported made sense because my guess is that cases aren’t diagnosed until a person is admitted as a patient in either a serious or critical stage, but hundreds of deaths?? That would suggest about 10,000 cases, if the 2% mortality rate holds. Very troubling.

Obama is what happens when you roll 18s on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma during character creation

Can’t wait to see what happens when people in the Admin start getting sick.

Yep. Time to send them all on a fact finding mission to China’s stricken regions. It’s a hoax so they have nothing to worry about. Maybe they can get to the bottom of this hoax.

Hell of a thing if this is accurate, cause I can’t recall Texas being that close for presidential elections since the 90s…

Yep. Probably the most naturally gifted politician I’ve observed. I was too young for Bill to analyze but it’s worthy to note that Obama got 50%+ twice. No Democrat had done that since FDR. And before FDR you go back to Cleveland. I’m sorry but I correct myself. It’s just Obama and FDR.

Except it’s like GURPS, so Obama needs all that because just being black is such a massive disadvantage.

I really think there are parts of the left that do not fully appreciate what he was able to accomplish with an opposition that despised him from the start.

I remember Michael Moore which btw is why I don’t give a shit that he was right about 2016 but I remember him one time on Maher complaining Obama didn’t act “black” enough. They wanted a Samuel L Jackson type not the man who is President Barack Obama. I genuinely liked Obama. I didn’t always agree with his decisions but I think he was a progressive and pragmatic positive force as POTUS.

re: #83 Scottish Dragon

You may know him as the proponent of the ‘Dyson Sphere’ megastructure that would capture all radiant energy from a star for use.

washingtonpost.com

Much respect to Dyson. R.I.P.

Altho some structures for harnessing much of the energy from a star are sound, the classic capture-all-of-it sphere design is seriously flawed —inherently unstable with respect to (passive) re-radiation of solar energy at the outer surface.

Except it’s like GURPS, which strives for realism, so Obama needs all that because just being black is such a massive disadvantage.

There are other systems I prefer, but I must admit the GURPS version of advantages and disadvantages would model those effects quite well.
